What Is a Full Arch Reconstruction?

Dental implants, dentures, bridges, fixed, removable: many options exist for replacing teeth. Some are single replacements, and others are a full arch reconstruction. What does that mean? Here’s what to know.

Understanding Full Arch Reconstruction

A full arch reconstruction is a procedure to replace a complete set of top or bottom teeth using dental implants. It’s sometimes called full arch restoration, full mouth dental implants, or implant-supported dentures and involves surgically placing posts in your jaw to rebuild your tooth root.

Once the posts are in place, your dentist attaches artificial teeth with a natural-looking gum base. The permanent teeth transform your smile and restore your ability to chew and speak comfortably.

Full Arch Options

Full arch reconstructions come in a few options, depending on your bone health and other needs. Your dentist can help you identify the best implant solutions, from fixed or removable to alternative styles.

Fixed

A fixed full-arch reconstruction is a full set of non-removable teeth. The teeth are permanently attached to the implant posts, so you can’t take them out at home. However, your dentist can remove them to make adjustments.

Removable

A removable full arch is a set of teeth that snap onto implants in your jaw. With this type of full arch reconstruction, you can pop your teeth in and out for easy cleaning or a break while at home.

All-on-X

A full arch reconstruction can use up to 16 implants. An all-on-X is simply another way of saying “fixed full arch dental implants”. It’s an alternative procedure that uses fewer implants to install teeth, whether you need 4, 5, 6, 8, etc. replacements. The procedure is sometimes known as the brand name All-on-4 or All-on-6.

Benefits of Full Arch Reconstruction

Whether you’re missing several teeth or have tooth loss from damage or disease, replacing your teeth improves your health and quality of life. Many people choose to use traditional removable dentures or false teeth, but these can cause bone loss, slippage, gum irritation, discomfort, and affect your facial structure.

A full arch reconstruction with dental implants is often a better route that provides optimal results and natural, complete smile restoration. An implant-supported full arch anchors artificial teeth to your jawbone, creating stability that helps maintain your natural bone structure.

In addition, a full arch with dental implants has other benefits, including:

  • Long-lasting durability
  • Bone loss prevention
  • Increases comfort
  • Resembles natural teeth

What to Expect

Getting a full arch reconstruction takes a few appointments, from assessment to implant installation and recovery.

Assessment

The process starts with an assessment and consultation with your dentist. You’ll have some exams and imaging to discuss your bone, gum, and tooth health and decide on the best approach.

Implant installation

During your next appointment, your dentist or surgeon will surgically install posts into specific areas of your jawbone. In some cases, you may go home with a set of temporary teeth that fit your implants. However, if not, your dentist will place a cap over the implant to protect it while you heal.

Recovery and Maintenance

Your mouth and jaw may feel uncomfortable during the first seven to 10 days, but the pain will go away. After two to six months, you’ll return to your dentist again to have the caps removed and receive your permanent teeth.
